What Every Expatriate Needs In The Kitchen
Thousands of expatriates leave the U. S. Every year to relocate to another country. While some will choose to bring all their household goods with them, most will leave the old stuff behind and begin anew. Many foreigners are currently relocating to the Philippine Islands. Here’s the reason.
One key factor drawing retired Americans to the Philippines is the low cost of living. A Social Security or disability check that can hardly make ends meet in the U. S. Can afford a comfortable living standard in the islands. How about a nice, 2-bedroom, 2-story house in a gated residential subdivision for about a hundred fifty dollars a month? Or a ten dollar a month water bill, $20 electric bill and less than $30 a month for high-speed internet and premium cable TV combination?
If you want to buy that same property in the Philippines you can get it for less than $30 thousand U. S. The only problem is that Filipino law forbids the owning of land by foreigners. You can marry a citizen and she can buy the house with your money, but you’ll NEVER own it, probably not even if she passes away.
Because of this, renting a house is a good way to go, especially a furnished one. Unfortunately, ‘furnished’ doesn’t mean ‘totally’ and there are always some things lacking that need to be purchased. In the Philippines, where rice is consumed at nearly every meal, a tiger rice cooker is an essential. They make the very best rice and nearly everybody has one.
A countertop microwave is something that, even if you brought one with you, it’s probably 110 and you need one that’s 220. You COULD get a converter, but not a really great idea for a microwave and almost as expensive as buying a new oven.
Tropical fruit drinks are a big part of the culture and a hand blender makes it quick and easy to whip one up. There are some nice models available that are simple to use and a snap to clean. They work for other mixing jobs too.
As with the microwave, the blender also has to be 220 volts or it will burn up if you plug it in and try to use it. Fortunately, most electronic devices (like the laptop and the cell phone) are designed to accept either voltage. So take your computer and cell phone with you and leave every else behind!
