Writing an honest, impressive resume?
I wouldn’t lie on a resume because I have a conscience and I’m not a dumbass… but I’m so scared I’ll never have another job for the rest of my life!!
I just don’t see how I can write an impressive resume. The key apparently, is to write about your achievements in each job, and show how you solved a problem. For example, “Implemented a new managerial strategy and sales increased 90% in the next quarter.” That’s ideal, I know.
The problem is I’ve had all these crappy jobs and don’t know how I can apply this rule to any of them! I substitute taught, worked at Belk’s and did an internship as a teacher assistant. I don’t remember whether sales increased at Belk’s and don’t remember what I had to do with it. As for substitute teaching… you’re only there for a day and you’re gone. And some of the other stuff I’ve done is confidential.
So am I screwed? Should I just move to a Pacific Island and eat lizards or do I have a prayer of getting a decent job?
No you are definitely not screwed! You don’t always have to have what the sales increases or whatever were. For the Belk thing, you could say something like “Listened to customers request and fulfilled them while suggesting upsells.” “Responsible for handling daily closing tasks including propely counting down cash registers and securily depositing money.” Take what you actually did and throw a lot of action words in there like “Responsible for, Managed, Developed, Mentored (for the teaching gigs).” You will be just fine.. just be confident and keep trying!
