Freshwater Pearl History
A thousand years before the birth of Christ, Egyptian civilizations of ancient times found the oyster’s iridescent mother-of-pearl to be a marvelous muse for fashioning into simple ornaments. Other cultures along the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf discovered the gem within the shell. People of ancient China, Japan and the Pacific also harvested natural pearls. China fished the fresh water lakes to find pristine pearls, while at the same time, Japan and the Pacific Islands found pearls in the seas lapping their coastlines.
By 200 BC, east-west trade routes to and from China began to flourish. The Roman Empire began their pearl mania and rulers like Caligula and Nero would cover their thrones in pearls. These rulers of that time would decorate their horses with pearl necklaces also. By the end of the fifth century AD, Christians and Islamic Empires would display pearls in their churches and mosques. Natural pearls became prominent in early religious art.
During the renaissance era and up to the 1600′s European rulers acquired pearls hungrily, showing off their lavish collections. Christopher Columbus discovered rich pearl beds along the Central American coast during the 1492 expeditions.
Over-fishing depleted many ancient natural pearl beds by the seventeenth century. In addition, the ancient pearl beds of Sri Lanka and the Red Sea met with depletion.
In the 19th century, Europeans found a new source of pearls in Australia, known as the South Sea pearls. Natural fresh water pearls in the United States along the great Mississippi river was an abundant source at one time. After the great depression, pearls suffered a great decline in sales. Today, mostly all pearls are cultured. The culturing of pearls has brought prices down tremendously. Today’s pearl market produces first class affordable pearls of all descriptions.
