Nassau is the Capital of the Bahamas and home to Parliament square which is in downtown Nassau, Parliament square is the centre of the Bahamian government. The government buildings are all pastel pink colours which have 2 houses one of which is a 16 member senate known as the upper house and the other is a 41 member house of assembly known as the lower house, there is also a ministerial cabinet headed by a prime minister. Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds of the square, however there are no interior guides and permission and accompaniment would be needed for a closer look at the building, Government house is the most secure building in the Bahamas. The buildings of Parliament Square were erected in the early 1800′s by Loyalists from North Carolina they also built the Supreme court which is behind the houses of Assembly and next to a marble statue of Queen Victoria, the supreme court has opening ceremonies 4 times a year in which resemble the houses of parliament in London by the members wearing wigs and baring Maces at this time the Bahamas Police force band plays to make it a very enjoyable event. There is a traditional changing of the Guard event every other Saturday at 10am which can be viewed by visitors this ceremony is held in honour of Queen Elizabeth II and is supported by the police force.

In February 2011 there was a protest held in the Square by disgruntled Bahamians due to the decision to sell a majority stake in the Bahamas Telecommunications company (BTC) to Cable and Wireless Communications there were around 800 protestors at the site and they managed to break down the barricades which the police had put in place to keep them from entering Parliament Square, which forced the police to form a human chain to prevent entry the protests went on for several days and there were between 700 and 800 protesters there.

Another historic place in the Bahamas is fort charlotte which was just one which was built to look out for invaders to the island it was built in 1788 by Lord Dunmore, it was a British colonial fort designed to protect this island and is the biggest one in the Bahamas region, the fort overlooks the harbour of Nassau and the Cruise ship terminal and there are some beautiful views from the fort when visiting it has a waterless moat and a drawbridge and also dungeons which can be toured daily, although the Fort may look menacing it never actually got involved in a battle.
